Reminder: for those who are permanently disabled, the federal government announced on 3.29.2021 that it would abolish student loans for all disabled persons.
those who have received student loan relief due to permanent disabilities are required to participate in a 3 year study where they are watched and expected to give earning information to the department. those whose income surpasses a certain amount may be disqualified from receiving the relief but more than 190,000 of those who identify as disabled will have their debts discharged and erased. this will apply to everyone who submitted paperwork by 3/29/2020, during the pandemic. originally, the department of education revoked the loan discharges for 41,000 borrowers with total and permanent disabilities due to paperwork issues during a pandemic stated perris yu, director of the National Consumer Law Center's Student Loan Borrower Assistance project.
"borrowers with total and permanent disabilities should focus on their well-being, not put their health on the line to submit earnings information during the [global] emergency," education secretary miguel cardona said in a statement. "Waiving these requirements will ensure no borrower who is totally and permanently disabled risks having to repay their loans simply because they could not submit paperwork."
