eddie murphy cover art for the "being eddie" documentary on netflix
the "being eddie" eddie murphy documentary cover from the netflix special

"being eddie" was a great film! it gave you insight to his upbringing, his trials and error & showed you where his heart stood the longest; his family. most importantly, it taught us how spiritually enlightened & compassionate eddie has become over the years. talkin about the passing of his eldest sibling, charlie murphy, who passed of cancer, the viewer can easily feel through the screen how impactful that loss was. just writing about it is hard. and the hardest truth? watching eddie decide in that moment to pull back & not get as emotional as he would like so as to not trigger an emotional spiral. been there before. we not only wish him peace after seeing this but we understand just how much brother hood & studying his craft has impacted him well.

with mr. murphy starting out doing impersonation, it is a wonder how he sky rocketed to the top with his films. but we soon learn that many of his projects, he has bootstrapped himself & it was received with major criticism, and pushback from "wider" audiences. we see that his glam life still has a root of simplicity at the helms and we see that though many have scowled him for dating outside his race & not patching things up with nicole murphy, that his recent relationship has not been as flimsy as the media has portrayed it to be... in fact, it has been a 15 year solid foundation rooted in friendship, honesty & understanding.

this was a great one to watch. it stayed up beat, add touches of art, had family friendly comedic lines & timing but still gave us a bit of eddie murphys growth. seeing him be loved by his children is one thin, but hearing him being bragged on by other top comedians like dave chappelle is an entire other! watching this has made us realize just how much he has done over these years in such a short amount of time & wonder what he has next. it felt like nostalgic story telling in a living room with the familys most fun uncle who overcame everything after a great thanksgiving dinner. rest in peace to charlie murphy.. you can tell his memory lives on within eddie & his grandchildren.

we would rate this a 9/10. felt sincere enough but done in a open canvas kind of way. check it out on netflix.
