releasing you from the mental matrix, trinity jagdeo launches disability comics that thrill & chill

Updated: Aug 3, 2021

after seeing one of her closest friends hospitalized for 6 mos due to a born disability that kept worsening, trinity jagdeo decided to be more pro-active, in increasing representation for those who are young and disabled. she grew up with her best-friend alexus dick and after almost losing her twice, her love and passion grew for advocacy and she began her own program called from we cant to we can inspired about her friendship and eventually began creating her comics on super heroes with disabilities.

the series began in 2018 and has four books out. they represent superheroes with various types of disabilities where characters were given uplifting names like, victorious victor' and 'the we can squad saves the day.' one book has a superhero based on alexus' younger brother, who has 'sma'. all characters have natural superpowers — or "something attainable" like super hearing or speed. "(you won’t see any webs shooting out of a superhero’s hands in her series!)" and jagdeo interviews those that she is basing her characters on, to be more intentional about how they look, dress, and live their daily lives.

"we make sure we're super specific because the more specific we are, the more relatable it is to other people." she has mentioned. through this journey and being friends with dick, trinity has also come to understand some issues with the american healthcare system and wants to aid and depict them.

"i always say that this organization is in honor of [dick], because I do not doubt in my mind if the roles were reversed, she would be doing the same thing," jagdeo said. "..feel like her spirit is embodied in mine - just doing the work that she would want me to do, and the disability community wants me to do."

jagdeo hopes to release two more comic books by the end of the year
